If Newtek is as close to releasing the Flyer as they seem, as evidenced
by the recent Flyer sightings in S. F., has anyone gotten their hands on
the system and given the editing model a shakedown cruise?

The Flyer sounds like great hardware, but unless the editing software is
sophisticated enough to do things like split edits, sliding in and out
points around, and clips locking and scene arranging, the benefits of
non-linear editing will be lost.

These much needed tools are especially needed as the projects get longer
and longer. The great benefit of film editing is that you can start to put
your film together at any point. Start at the end if you want. Take a scene
at a time. Paste the whole thing together, watch it, and disassemble for
more editing.

THe great temptation and the first really sexy thing that people notice
about non-linear editing is that they can grab clips and put them
together. And that is fine for starters. But in order for you to make
money on the deal, editors need higher order tools to organize, compose,
and "decompose" elements, shots, scenes, and entire programs. IMHO, it
will be just as easy to edit a long-form project together on a traditional
editing system as to use tools that are "not quite there yet."

So congratulation to Newtek on their achievments so far, but lets
keep on asking for the same level of software sophistication in the Flyer
that we have asked for (and been delivered) with Lightwave. I would hate
for the Flyer to crash because the tools aren't robust enough.
